I don't usually post black and white images but during the bright moon I can't collect color because of light pollution. So the telescope doesn't sit idly in good weather, I returned to this old friend, B33 or the Horsehead Nebula in Orion. This image was taken over three nights ending February 1, 2012, through a hydrogen-alpha filter which reduces the brightness of stars but highlights details in the nebula. The nebula is about 86 light years away and was discovered in 1888 on a photographic plate taken at Harvard College Observatory. You can click on the image for a more detailed view.
