Sharpless 2-9

This is a busy region near the center of our galaxy awash with color and different types of objects. The red nebula is Sharpless 2-9, an emission nebula in the constellation of Scorpius. To the left is a blue reflection nebula, IC4603. At the bottom is the globular cluster Messier 4. The yellow glow is from the star Antares, which is just out of frame. This image consists of 8 hours of exposure on June 12, 14, 15 and 16, 2009 using a Takahashi FSQ-106 and and STL11000 CCD camera. Click on the image to see it at higher resolution.
