This striking massive formation of gas and dust in the constellation of Taurus is thick enough to be blocking the star light behind it. You can also see a small blue emission nebula near the center of the frame. This image, taken on January 17, 2009 is a 4 hour exposure. These clouds are thought to be about 500 light years distant. The telescope was a Takahashi FSQ-106. The camera was my STL11000K 11 megapixel CCD imager. Click on the image to see it in larger scale.
