Horsehead and Flame Nebula

The Horsehead Nebula (also known as Barnard 33 ) is a dark nebula in the constellation Orion about 1500 light years from earth. The nebula is located just to the south of the star Alnitak (the bright star at center left), which is farthest east on Orion's Belt, and is part of the much larger Orion Molecular Cloud Complex. To the lower left is the Flame Nebula designated as NGC 2024 and Sh2-277. It is an emission nebula, also in the constellation Orion. It is about 900 to 1,500 light-years away. I wanted to get both objects, but the field of view of my telescope would not take in both objects. So here is a 4 image mosaic that gives me the desired wider field. (You can see my normal field of view in this color image.) This is 12 hours total exposure. The original image is almost 9,000 pixels wide. The imaging session started on Dec 29, 2014 and ended on January 5, 2015. Click on the image for a more detailed view.
